Subcultural phenomena, leisure activities, and the negotiation of community and identity are the guiding themes of Nicole Schatt’s series of ink drawings. The artist shows portraits of adolescents, posing on their own or in groups. With their gestures, facial expressions, sports attire, accessories, and in particular their staging and interactions within the group, they develop a “look and feel” that creates visions of urban life spanning hip-hop culture and break dance. In this context, sports serve as a vehicle for collectively exploring and testing group dynamics and identity, cementing friendships, occupying public urban space, and experiencing joy and creative leisure. Schatt’s subtle sketches also show how, in contemporary youth cultures, these games function on more than just a physical level. They also capture flashes of emotional worlds and demonstrate the effectiveness of codes and rituals in sport and play—and thus in the establishment of social relationships, the formation of communities, and the individual’s position within them. Subkulturelle Erscheinungen, Freizeitaktivitäten, aber auch das Ausverhandeln von Gemeinschaft und Identität sind das Leitmotiv von Nicole Schatts Serie an Tuschezeichnungen. Die Künstlerin zeigt Porträts von Jugendlichen, die einzeln oder in Gruppen posieren. Über ihre Gestik, Mimik, (Sport)kleidung, Accessoires, aber vor allem das Interagieren miteinander und die Inszenierung in der Gruppe schaffen sie ein „Look & Feel“, das zwischen Hip-Hop-Kultur und Breakdance urbane Lebensentwürfe kreiert. Das sportliche Spiel dient hier dem gemeinsamen Erforschen und Austesten von Gruppendynamiken und (individueller) Identität, dem Festigen von Freundschaften, dem Einnehmen von öffentlichem Stadtraum und durchaus auch der Freude und dem kreativen Müßiggang. Zugleich zeigen Schatts subtile Skizzen gegenwärtiger Jugendkulturen, wie sehr dieses Spielen nicht nur auf einer körperlichen Ebene funktioniert. Sie lassen ebenso Gefühlswelten durchblitzen und zeigen die Wirkmächtigkeit von Codes und Ritualen im Sport und im Spiel – und in weiterer Folge im Eingehen sozialer Beziehungen, in der Bildung von Gemeinschaften und der eigenen Positionierung innerhalb dieser.
