Michael Mauracher began studying art history and communication science at the University of Salzburg in 1974. He completed his training in fine-art photography at the Salzburg College from 1975 to 1976 and co-founded Galerie Fotohof in Salzburg in 1981. From 1984 to 1994 he was a lecturer in fine-art photography at Salzburg College where he also organized the international workshop program. Mauracher has been a lecturer in fine-art photography and new media at the Mozarteum University since 1995 and senior lecturer since 2011. In parallel he teaches as an honorary professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Leipzig. In 1981 Mauracher started working on an ongoing series of portraits of a man, deliberately leaving his identity obscure. Since then he has created sixty individual portraits. The artist is addressing the question of the expressive possibilities both in front of and behind the camera, the "durability" of a photographic image of a human being: What does an image tell us about a person? 1974 studierte Michael Mauracher Kunstgeschichte und Kommunikationswissenschaften an der Universität Salzburg. Von 1975 bis 1976 absolvierte er eine Ausbildung für künstlerische Fotografie am Salzburg College und war 1981 Mitbegründer der Galerie Fotohof in Salzburg. Von 1984 bis 1994 hatte er einen Lehrauftrag für künstlerische Fotografie und organisierte das internationale Workshop-Programm des Salzburg College. Seit 1995 ist Mauracher Lehrbeauftragter für Fotografie und Neue Medien und seit 2011 Senior Lecturer an der Universität Mozarteum. Parallel dazu unterrichtet er im Rahmen einer Honorarprofessur an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig. Mauracher hat 1981 mit der fortlaufenden Porträtserie eines Mannes begonnen, dessen Identität er bewusst im Unklaren lassen will. Mittlerweile sind 60 Einzelbildnisse entstanden. Dem Künstler geht es in dieser Serie um die Frage nach den Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten vor und hinter der Kamera, nach der „Haltbarkeit" eines fotografierten Menschenbildes: Was sagt ein Bild über einen Menschen aus?
