Boghiguian entwickelt ihre Werke aus der Auseinandersetzung mit Orten und Kulturen auf ihren vielen Reisen. Mit der Installation „A Play to Play" (2013) bezieht sie sich auf die Unabhängigkeitsbewegung in Indien und den indischen Dichter und Literaturnobelpreisträger Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941). In dem Theaterstück „The Post Office", das er 1912 verfasste, schildert der Dichter die Geschichte des kranken Jungen Amal, der das Haus nicht verlassen kann und nur durch Erzählungen von der Außenwelt erfährt. Boghiguians Arbeit ist eine mehrteilige bühnenhafte Installation mit einem Podest, auf dem sie Figuren und Objekte arrangiert. Für die Recherche zu dieser Arbeit reiste die Künstlerin in die bengalische Stadt Shantiniketan, wo Tagore eine Universität gegründet hatte.
Einen zentralen Kern in Boghiguians künstlerischer Arbeit bilden handbemalte Notiz- und Künstlerbücher. In Verbindung mit ihrer Personale im Museum der Moderne Salzburg im Jahr 2018 hat die Künstlerin eine Auswahl dieser wichtigen Werkgruppe dem Museum geschenkt. Ihr Werk steht beispielhaft für eine polyperspektivische Weltsicht und nimmt darum in der Sammlung des Museum der Moderne Salzburg eine zentrale Rolle ein. (Thorsten Sadowsky)
In one-of-a-kind artist’s books, collages, and spectacular installations, Anna Boghiguian creates poetic narrative spaces in which she opens up critical perspectives on global history by showing the consequences of colonization and migration in the present. The Cairo-born Egyptian-Canadian artist of Armenian origin has received international acclaim and accolades, including the Golden Lion for her contribution to the Armenian Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale (2015).
Boghiguian develops her works based on the exploration of places and cultures on her many travels. Her installation "A Play to Play" (2013) refers to the independence movement in India and the Indian poet and Nobel Prize laureate Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941). In "The Post Office", a play written in 1912, Tagore tells the story of Amal, a sick boy who cannot leave the house and only learns about the outside world through stories. Boghiguian’s work is a multi-part, stage-like installation featuring a podium on which she arranges figures and objects. To research this work, the artist traveled to the Bengalese city of Shantiniketan where Tagore had founded a university.
Hand-painted notebooks and artist’s books are a core part of Boghiguian’s artistic practice. In the context of her solo exhibition at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg in 2018, the artist donated a selection of this major body of work to the museum. Her work exemplifies a multiperspective worldview and therefore occupies a central place in the collection of the Museum der Moderne Salzburg. (Thorsten Sadowsky)
