About the workThe German November Revolution of 1918–1919, which overthrew the monarchy, prompted this mocking lithograph. It shows the head of Marianne, the personification of France, with blood dripping from her mouth. The inscription “Liberté, Égalité, Fratricide” (Liberty, Equality, Fratricide) parodies the battle cry of the French Revolution, suggesting that brotherly love and mortal hatred are never far apart.
